There are four words that every parent who is venturing on a road trip with kids dreads. Any guesses?! If you said, ‘Are we there yet’ Ding! Ding! Ding! You’re spot on. Comprehending time is a challenge especially for younger kids. That’s why I love to find simple ways to help little travelers visualize how much time is left. This Road Trip Activity Paper Chain Countdown is easy to put together and will not only help your kiddo see how much time is left, but also will keep them busy with fun things to do. Ready to create one of your own? I’ll show you how simple it is!
HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- Free printable (get the free download at the bottom of this post) OR construction paper
- Heavy Cardstock
HOW TO MAKE A ROAD TRIP ACTIVITY PAPER CHAIN COUNTDOWN:
1. Print the Road Trip Paper Chain Countdown Printable on cardstock.
Use scissors to cut out each of the strips.
No printer? No problem! You could also use any construction paper you have on hand. Just cut the paper of your choice into 1″ strips.
2. Use a marker to write activities on the paper strips.
You can use as many or as few activities as you want. For example you could have one activity prepared for every hour, state, etc. You decide!
To get your creativity flowing here’s some ideas for activities. Feel free to use these or come up with your own.
Paper Chain Countdown Activity Ideas:
Tell a Story
Snacktivity time! Make a cheerio or fruit loop necklace and then gobble it up.
Play I spy with my little eye (or try out one of these waiting games)
Wrap up a new dollar store toy
Listen to an Audio Book
Make a face with stickers
Color a picture

3. Use a stapler to secure the pieces of paper together.
Repeat with the other pieces of paper until you form a chain.
4. Hang up the finished paper chain in your car
5. Have fun counting down!
Once I introduced paper chain countdowns to my girls, they pretty much want to make one for every possible holiday or event. Do your kids love ripping off each chain as much as mine do?! If so, they are going to love this.
Bonus Tip: You might want to make two chains (one for on the way there and one for on the way back).
